Good Afternoon First Grade Families!
Yet another beautiful winter weekend to rest up, enjoy the outdoors or read a good book :) *Reminder: 1/2 day on Friday January 22! Dismissal begins at 11:15 for pick-up. Looking forward to another fun week of learning and growing in 1st grade! Please keep up the reading and practicing sight words at home. I am seeing some great things happening in the classroom. Being in school makes a difference, but the help from home is also making a difference. Report Cards go home on Monday, February 1. Curriculum News Language Arts: Story: Frog and Toad Together: The Garden ~ Genre: Animal Fantasy Question: What changes happen in the garden? Comprehension Strategy: Plot and Visualize Phonics: -r controlled, endings -ed and -ing Words to Read and Spell: asked, called, helped, jogged, planned, again, garden, how, read, soon, when, come Math Strategy: Making a ten when one addend is 8. Ex. 8+7 could be changed to to 10+5. Skill: Finding 10 more, 10 less, 1 more and 1 less from any number up to 100. Writing We are still working on writing a persuasive piece; using three good reasons to convince others of our opinion! We are continuing our work with writing complete sentences and using appropriate punctuation. Social Studies Is it Ever Okay to Break a Rule? Students will be able to Identify situations in which people act as good citizens in emergency scenarios or when a rule or law is unfair etc. . We had a wonderful first week back :) New pods, new seats and lots of new learning and growing! I hope you heard a lot of good things from your first grader! This week, we will start another new schedule. Our specials for the next five weeks will be Science, Art and Music. January 22: AM 1/2 day for students. PM: Teachers will be writing report cards :) We have a new student joining us on January 25. Welcome back Brooks Lampen! Curriculum News Language Arts: Story: Jan's New Home ~ Genre: Realistic Fiction Comprehension Strategy: Theme and Monitor and Fix-Up Phonics: -es as plural, -es as an ending, words with -or and -ore Words to Read and Spell: buses, classes, fixes, kisses, wishes, away, car, friend, our, school, house, very Math: Use the associative property and the commutative property to make a ten to solve when adding with three addends. (Ex. 6+4+9 would become 10+9) Make a ten when one addend is 9. ( Ex. 9+6 would become 10+5) Writing: Spelling words correctly in daily writing tasks. Writing sentences with a noun and a verb and words that express a feeling. Continuing our work with writing persuasive and opinion pieces. Social Studies: Is It Ever Okay to Break a Rule? If a rule is unfair or does not respect the rights of others, it is important to speak out against it, or work to change it. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! Happy New Year to All! I can't thank you enough for your children's drawings, cards, gifts and well wishes this Holiday Season! I am truly blessed :) I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday morning! The classroom is all set and so am I! We are starting the new year with some students in a new pod and all students in new seats :) *I will send the new pod lists as an attachment :) Exciting news; we have a student teacher from Hope College who will be joining us on January 25. Colton has great references and after a fun Zoom meeting, he seems like a great fit for our classroom :) Our class is a perfect place for a soon-to-be teacher to learn. We have grown so much as a group. I can't wait for him to meet 'your kids' and let the magic begin!
